Magda Ramirez
The girl behind The Mexican Artist
In August of 2019, I graduated from Brigham Young University-Idaho with a BA in Art and an emphasis in Printmaking.
My journey as an artist has been long. I started out as a theater student in college, only to then find myself attracted to visual art when I moved to the U.S. from Mexico in 2012. My journey as a visual artist started with graphic design and photography, but eventually I found my deepest passion in life during my second year of college: printmaking.
Although I love all forms of art, in Printmaking I found what I felt was a methodic science behind art, and that fascinated me. In the words of Louise Joséphine Bourgeois, "I got peace of mind, only through the study of rules nobody could change.”
Printmaking became a mathematic process that I practiced constantly and through this process I found another form of creative mindset which suited me perfectly.
A teacher once told me, "One makes art from the experiences we have in life; in art we share what we know, otherwise we would be lying." This phrase was forever engraved in my brain and because of it, all my work revolves around what I know and what I have experienced in my life, from the stories my grandma told me when I was a child to my heartbreaks and nightmares.
Through visual art I have come to understand and have been able to create another language full of forms, textures, colors, words, and metaphors that are open to interpretation.
Thanks for being here!
